Apple Reportedly Trying To Get Samsung To Lower Price Of OLEDs

Recently it was reported that Apple might not be able to source OLED panels from LG due to the company apparently not being able to meet production targets. As a result it was reported that Apple might have to go back to relying on Samsung, which therein lies a problem because if the reports are accurate, Samsung charges a premium for its OLED panels.

The good news is that Apple could be looking for a way to cut costs because a report from DigiTimes (via Cult of Mac) has revealed that Apple is negotiating with Samsung on OLED prices where Samsung might only charge Apple $100 per panel versus $110. Apple is also said to be doubling their orders and they are hoping that the amount of orders will convince Samsung to offer a discount.

There have been rumors suggesting that Apple could charge more than $1,000 for its 2018 iPhones and it seems that the OLED panels could be one of the factors determining its high price. However it should be noted that price of components is hard to pin down accurately. This is because companies might offer discounts in bulk, or discounts based on their relationship with their customers, so obviously this should be taken with a grain of salt for now.

Nintendo Switch hack: What you need to know

It’s only Tuesday and it’s already been a big week for Nintendo Switch owners, or at least those who would like to hack their console and open the door to homebrew software. Hacking the Switch is a pastime that’s still in its infancy, but two different groups have come forward with new vulnerabilities that open the floodgates, so to speak. Most interesting of all, these aren’t exploits that Nintendo can patch, and every Switch that’s currently out in the wild is vulnerable to them.

Yesterday, Kate Temkin and the team at ReSwitched detailed a new exploit they’re calling Fusée Gelée. This exploit takes advantage of bugs in the Switch’s bootROM and USB recovery mode, which can be exploited to run arbitrary code. Temkin and ReSwitched have documented the exploit over on GitHub, notifying both Nintendo and NVIDIA of the vulnerability in the process.

ReSwitched isn’t the only group that has found this exploit. In a blog post today, the team at fail0verflow detailed ShofEL2, an exploit that takes advantage of this buggy code in the same way Fusée Gelée does. The group even shared a video of Linux running on the Switch, with the demonstrator using the console’s touchscreen to navigate through the OS.

So, why is this vulnerability such a big deal? After all, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of hackers gaining access to the Switch and using those exploits to run different operating systems. In short: These exploits are something to get excited about because the Switch’s bootROM is hard coded, meaning it can’t be updated to fix the vulnerability. That, in turn, means each of the 14 million Switch units Nintendo has sold thus far are affected by this, and there’s nothing Nintendo nor NVIDIA can do to permanently change that.

This, obviously, is great news for people who view the Switch as an excellent machine for running custom OSes and homebrew applications, as it means that any Switch in existence at this moment can be exploited to run that software. Running the exploit doesn’t require use of a modchip either, as the Switch’s USB recovery mode can be accessed by simply by shorting a pin on the connector for the right-hand Joy-Con.

That doesn’t mean we won’t see hackers and modders release modchips to help users along in the future, but Temkin points out in an FAQ about Fusée Gelée that this exploit can indeed be carried out without any modification to the console itself.

For most Switch owners, this discovery doesn’t mean much at the moment. We’re still in the early days of ShofEL2 and Fusée Gelée, which means that the custom firmwares required to run homebrew applications don’t exist yet. While tech savvy users could likely perform this exploit with the information these groups have shared thus far, both fail0verflow and ReSwitched say they’ll have user-friendly guides coming up soon – in ReSwitched’s case, we’ll see those guides and general public disclosure land on June 15.

WARNING: If you’re going to try apply this exploit by yourself, it’s best to heed fail0verflow’s warning. “If your Switch catches fire or turns into an Ouya, it’s not our fault,” the group writes over on GitHub. “It’s stupidly easy to blow up embedded platforms like this with bad software (e.g. all voltages are software-controlled). We already caused temporary damage to one LCD panel with bad power sequencing code. Seriously, do not complain if something goes wrong.”

While this is exciting news for the homebrew community, this is awful news for Nintendo and NVIDIA. It’s inevitable that people will eventually start using this vulnerability for piracy, and the fact that it can’t be patched means there isn’t much Nintendo can do to stop it. The two can, of course, patch the vulnerability on new Tegra processors that are rolling off the production line, but that doesn’t solve the problem of existing Switches.

Nintendo will likely do what it can to make life difficult for those using a modded Switch – such as ban those consoles from playing online – but without the option for an actual fix, it seems like this vulnerability is here to stay. We expect to hear a lot more about this exploit as we move into deeper into summer, so stay tuned for more.

Apple and Ireland reach tax escrow deal as EU appeal is set for fall

(Reuters) — An appeal by Apple and Ireland against a European Union ruling for the U.S. firm to pay 13 billion euros ($16 billion) in disputed taxes is likely to be heard in the autumn, Irish Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe said on Tuesday.

The European Commission ruled in August 2016 that Apple had received unfair tax incentives. Both Apple and Dublin are appealing the original ruling, saying the iPhone maker’s tax treatment was in line with Irish and European Union law.

“We expect the appeal is likely to begin in the Autumn,” Donohoe told journalists on Tuesday. “How long the hearings will last will depend on the judges overseeing it and could be open to either party after that to take any further actions.”

The Commission told Ireland to collect 13 billion euros in back taxes, a figure Ireland’s finance department estimated last year could reach 15 billion euros including EU interest.

Interest due by Apple will be calculated after the initial 13 billion is collected, Donohoe said.

Last October the Commission said it was taking Dublin to the European Court of Justice over delays in recovering the money.

The government said it was acting as fast as it could to facilitate the collection of the funds.

Last month it appointed managers for an escrow account to hold the money and Donohoe on Tuesday said the money would begin to be paid by Apple in a series of payments starting in the second quarter, with all funds in place by the end of the third quarter.

Donohoe said the fund would make investment decisions that are low risk and that the Irish taxpayer would be protected.

“Any loss from the fund will reside with the fund, not with the taxpayer,” he said.

Delivery Bots Have Awkward Sidewalk Interactions, Too

Self-driving cars have it rough. They have to detect the world around them in fine detail, learn to recognize signals, and avoid running over pets. But hey, at least they’ll spend most of their time dealing with other robot cars, not people.

Now, a delivery robot, on the other hand, it roams sidewalks. That means interacting with people—lots of people—and dogs and trash and pigeons. Unlike a road, a sidewalk is nearly devoid of structure. It’s chaos.

Block by block, a San Francisco startup called Marble has been trying to conquer that chaos with a self-driving delivery cart. Today, they’re announcing a new, more powerful robot they hope is up to the task—and that will prove to skeptical regulators that the machines are smart enough operate safely on their own.

Marble’s previous robot is what we might call semi-autonomous. It can find its way around, but a human chaperone always follows to remote-control it out of trouble. But that’s a temporary measure—Marble wants to make these things proficient enough to find their own way around the people and the buskers and the intersections. One particularly important upgrade is extra cameras to fill in blind spots. “As you might imagine, one of the challenges that we have is seeing a small curb, understanding where it is, and driving around that in a sensible way, or telling the difference between a dog’s tail and a stick,” says Kevin Peterson, Marble cofounder and software lead. “So the upgrades in cameras have improved that.”

The new robot also has three times the amount of computing power, meaning it can crunch more data coming in from the environment. That’ll be essential for getting the robot to go fully autonomous. The idea is that instead of following the robot around, a human chaperone could someday sit in a call center and monitor a fleet of robots from afar. (Babysitter for robots is actually a hot new job, by the way.)

To get to that point, though, Marble has to be sure its robot can follow the rules of the road. “We believe it’s important to have a very polite robot that understands the kind of cues of walking through a crowd,” says Matt Delaney, CEO and cofounder of Marble. Self-driving cars have nice orderly lanes, but think about what happens when you’re walking right at another person on a sidewalk.

Human behavior on a sidewalk is weirdly complex. You know that thing where a group in front of you is walking just too slow for your liking, and you’ve got to turbo around them? Or if you’re feeling lazy, you just slow down a bit to match their speed. But you don’t follow too close, because you’re not a weirdo.

So Marble has been rating the robot’s interactions with people on the street. “When we see something really awkward happen in real life, we take that and reproduce it,” says Peterson. “There we come up with a scoring system and sort of evaluate how the system is doing.” Thus the team can objectively score the human notion of “awkwardness.”

Marble is learning that a robot has to nonverbally telegraph its intentions if it expects to get anywhere. Take a super-crowded intersection, for instance. Lots and lots of cars in a delicate ballet coming from all directions. The robot can’t just sit there and expect everyone to notice. “If you’re too cautious then cars will just drive, if you’re too bold then of course you get hit,” says Peterson. “So there’s a sweet spot, where the vehicle has to wait an appropriate amount of time and indicate that it’s going into the world.”

That means inching out a bit to nonverbally announce, Hey, I’m not just waiting on this street corner. I need to get across. Ideally at that point drivers let it pass like they would for a human pedestrian. The robot has analyzed the scenario and chosen the course of action that’s both efficient and safe.

On a more subtle level, the design of Marble’s robot also seems to telegraph information. For one, this new version is pared down (yet still carries the same amount of payload), perhaps giving it a friendlier vibe. “What we found is that people just enjoy the vehicle more if it’s smaller,” says Delaney.

Though people shouldn’t enjoy it too much. Marble has found its robot to be very … approachable. Pedestrians will stop and stand in its way, apparently to test the soundness of its sensors. Which may be inevitable in these early days of street-roaming robots—humans still want to test the novel system. So Marble’s robot comes equipped with a microphone and speaker for the human chaperone who follows it to remind gawkers that the machine is on the job.

Marble’s robot has also attracted the attention of San Francisco regulators. Last December, the Board of Supervisors voted to severely restrict the machines to areas with low foot traffic.
“The business model is basically get as many robots out there to do deliveries and somebody in some office will monitor all these robots,” San Francisco supervisor Norman Yee told WIRED at the time. “So at that point you’re inviting potential collisions with people.”

Yes, whether or not we trust robots to not run down pedestrians is now a conversation we need to have. But Marble and other companies that have unleashed robots on cities are learning fascinating lessons in human-robot interaction, lessons that will shape a world we’ll be sharing with more and more machines. So if you see a robot waiting the cross the street, be patient. It’s working harder than you think.

Christina Aguilera’s ‘Carpool Karaoke’ has a surprise celebrity guest appearance

It’s been a while since our last Carpool Karaoke, but this one’s been worth the wait.

In the 8-minute episode above, James Corden and Christina Aguilera slay some “Fighter” before talking old Mickey Mouse Club crushes (apparently Ryan Gosling had a thing for Britney back in the day) and then absolutely crushing a heartfelt rendition of “Beautiful”. Melissa McCarthy even gets involved at one point.

The biggest, indisputable takeaway though? Christina Aguilera’s voice is just ridiculously, ridiculously good.

Americans want tech companies to fix the internet, not the government

After first rocketing on to the scene as a “thing” in 2016, it didn’t take “fake news” long to worm its way into the American lexicon. And while bogus information in the digital age is as old as the internet itself, 2016 was the first time we found the words to articulate it, even crassly.

Americans understand the problem, now more than ever. But according to a new poll by Pew Research, it’s not lawmakers the majority of citizens are counting on to fix it. Quite the opposite, actually.

Nearly 60 percent of those polled agree the mess belongs to the companies that created it. And by allowing lawmakers to tackle the issue, we risk further revocation of our digital freedoms.

The second part of the poll is where it gets a little foggy.

56 percent of those surveyed responded that “Tech companies should take steps to restrict false info online, even if it limits freedom of info.” Or, put plainly, we’re okay with tech companies limiting the flow of information to stop fake news, but overwhelmingly against the government taking the same action.

The internet is a confusing place.

Interestingly, results didn’t follow any sort of partisan lines. The resistance to US government action “cuts across nearly all demographic groups studied,” according to the study, as did the desire for tech companies to fix the problem — if anyone did.

The only exceptions were those with less than a high school degree or those 50 and older.

Speaking of age, the other interesting thing of note is that younger Americans are more resistant to changes of either type. Among adults 18 to 29, over half believed neither regulators (65 percent) nor tech companies (56 percent) should limit the flow of information to stop the spread of fake news.

We get it, memes are dank and you’re willing to wade through some BS to get ’em.
